The CD arrived when I was so absorbed in my work, I didn’t notice the sound of the mailman knocking. The disc itself was white with blue lettering, and when I picked it up to examine it, I suddenly felt like there was something heavy in my hands. The realization that an album had arrived coursed through me like a spike in my spine. It was one of those moments you just don’t want to overthink; you can’t even remember how many years it had been since your last album came out or if anyone you know still buys CDs or not. I was grateful, but it kept me from bragging to the girls about what I’d brought home. I put it on and let the sound wash over me, the quiet little echoes of classical music and Spanish vallenato weaved through my thoughts. I didn’t want to open up Facebook and find that a bunch of people who I don’t know like me were talking about me and how happy they were that someone had finally come out with an album after so long. There was no reason to get excited about this—the disc had been here all along, just under my nose the whole time, but until today I hadn’t seen it. I made a cup of tea and sat on a stool by the window, sipping it with silence as my fingers danced over the CD. It was a collection of recordings from Roupa Nova’s first four albums, remastered. I wasn’t sure I could hear the difference between them anyway. What I remembered from that time was that they were recorded with an old Sony Walkman—the kind without tape—and seemed to drift in and out of focus. I'd always thought that was kind of cool, but now, finding myself back in those moments so many years later, I realized they may have been blurry or washed out because there were no CDs back then. I was surprised to hear some of the songs from the lost albums too. I still didn’t know how to play much of what I heard. In fact, I couldn’t even play much if any at all. But there they were, in my hands, thanks to a disc from a time when there was no Internet, when CDs were so much more expensive that you might have only bought a few in a lifetime and then never listened to them again. And then it happened: The music started up again, and the last five years came rushing back at me just as unexpectedly as they had when I first heard them in 2007. I grabbed my guitar and music sheets and started playing to the sound of the guitar that seemed to be coming from somewhere other than the speakers. I could barely keep up with the notes, but it didn’t matter anymore. In those moments, as I strummed along as best as I could, all I knew was that those invisible fingers were playing again. The music was flowing from me as surely as it had flowed from them all those years ago, and any concerns about whether I still knew how to play or not disappeared when I realized that they didn’t either when they made these songs. eccc085e13
